The Advantages of Resistance Welding

Many people believe that metal is welded by simply firing up a blow torch and running it along the rim of the metal to weld it together. But the truth is that expert welding is essentially much more complex. It is an art that entails extensive experience and expertise to master and perfect. However, over the years technology has become extremely sophisticated and advanced, and resistance welding is now the preferred choice. 

Understanding Resistance Welding 

Resistance welding is a thermo-electric process whereby heat is produced at the crossing point of the materials to be bonded, through the use of an electric current and mechanical pressure under a controlled force. Weld electrodes conduct the electric current to the two pieces of metal as they are forged together. Typically the materials that are bonded together by this process are metallic parts, although plastics can also be bonded using this methods. If the process is done accurately, resistance welding is a fast and efficient way to bond two pieces of material together, but if done poorly, the weld can easily crack, become indented or irregular, or even break and be problematic.

Resistance welding is used across a broad range of manufacturing industries, such as the automotive industry, aerospace industry, construction industry, heating industry and the ventilation industry. Furthermore, there are many variations of the resistance welding process, with the most common being spot welding (RSW), resistance projection welding (RPW), resistance seam welding (RSEW), flash and resistance butt welding, high frequency welding, and micro and miniature resistance welding.

The Advantages

Resistance welding brings with it many key advantages above other processes. Firstly and foremost, due to its low voltage consumption, it is easily automated and is operator friendly. Secondly, it offers a much shorter process time that does not rely on brazing materials, solders or welding rods. Furthermore, due to its high speed and reliable resistance, it is also suitable for high rate production. In addition, it is environmentally friendly and is an economical solution.
